What is blogging and how does it work? Answering your questions about blogging for small businesses.

When you hear the word blogging, what do you think of?

Recipes buried under 100 ads?  Home decor blogs filled with gorgeous houses with links to buy the products that you add to your cart but never buy?

Many people think that blogging is “dead” or is only for food, fashion, and home influencers but it’s for everyone!

In this post, I’ll share why blogs are still relevant and go through some of the FAQs that I get about getting started.

Ready, let’s go!

Are blogs still relevant?

Think about how many times, especially for business purposes you Google something.

“How to add a custom font to Squarespace?”

“How to use Creator Studio?”

“How to not lose your mind as an online business owner.”

If you scroll down the results, you’ll see that they are blog posts!

Do you use Pinterest for inspiration or research? Yup, it’s pulling results from blog posts.

So you can see that yes, blogging is still alive and well.

Now the big question…

Do you need a blog for your business to be successful? No, but you can use it as another source of lead generation.

Now that we’ve covered all of that, let’s get into some of the biggest questions when it comes to starting a blog for your business.

5 Advantages of Blogging:

🔥 Helps you establish your brand by sharing your expertise and personality.

🔥 Become the go-to person in your niché for people to learn from.

🔥 Use the blog post as origin content that you can break down and repurpose for other marketing channels.

🔥 Drive people to your website through SEO.

🔥 Create a funnel within each blog post with footers and CTAs that encourage people to sign up for your freebie, book a call, read more, etc.

Now that we’ve covered all of that, let’s get into some of the biggest questions when it comes to starting a blog for your business.

What should I write about? How to find the best blog topics.

Start simple, go to your best-performing content, and repurpose it by elaborating more.

Other places to find blog topics:

✔️ FAQs in your niche

✔️ Favorite Tools

✔️ Myths

✔️ Client Journey

✔️ Industry Insights

You can also find topics on Pinterest, keyword research, and social media comments! See what people are talking about and answer their questions.

How often should I be blogging?

Google loves consistency whether you post one blog per month or once a week, do what works for you.

Blogging is a long game, you may not see results until after 3-6 months of blogging consistently.

What about formatting and writing? Tips for blog formatting (the simple way)

Throw out your college grammar lessons, blogs don’t have to be stuffy essays, just think of them as a long caption that you’d write for Instagram.

Keep posts scannable using plenty of white space, clear headings, and bullet points. Don’t be afraid to use emojis, images, GIFs, etc.

Make it fun and easy to read.

What about SEO (search engine optimization)? How keywords work.

My first piece of advice, write for your readers, not SEO.

Aka don’t keyword stuff by adding a keyword in every single sentence, let them flow naturally.

Keywords or key phrases help your content “rank” or get seen in Google results. I like to think of what phrases my target audience would be typing into Google when searching for something.

You’ll want to do keyword research during your blog writing process and include them in your title, headings, meta-descriptions, etc.

I have more info on keyword research here.

Don’t get hung up on SEO and technicalities when it comes to blogging, just get started and you’ll learn and perfect your process along the way.
