5 Eye-Catching Design Tips for Your Squarespace Blog to Keep Readers Engaged

I think when most people hear the word blog, their minds automatically go to recipes (well a recipe hidden underneath 4 pages ads and scrolling), newborn advice, and travel blogs.

Business owners forget that blogging can work for them too!

Blogs are a great way to boost your visibility outside of social media and get found in Google by using SEO keywords. One of the things that holds business owners back from starting a blog is knowing how to format them, which is funny because that’s actually my favorite part!

Just as you add personality to your social media content and emails – you can do the same on your blog!

No one wants to read boring blocks of text, which is why I’m sharing design tips that’ll make your blog posts binge-worthy, fun, and super engaging for your audience. Ready? Let’s go!

*Throughout this post, you’ll see that I reference Squarespace but you can use these tips on any
blog platform.*

Blogging Layout Design Tips to Get Readers Hooked

Make it pretty! 😍 Use your brand colors.

Use brand colors in your headings, design elements, underlines, etc. This helps to break up the text while keeping it visually appealing for readers.

Plus, this is a great way to build brand recognition! Win, win.

Have fun with fonts!

Using different fonts, bold, italics, and underlines can help emphasize key points and keep readers’ attention where you want it.

Express yourself, friend!

Make It Skimmable.

Set up your headings and subheadings in your Squarespace design settings, and choose your fonts and a hierarchy of sizes.

The key is to make your content easy to digest — because people are bussyyyyy and just want their questions answered quickly.

Bonus points
if you add a TL;DR or “Key Takeaways” at the end to wrap it all up in a neat little bow.

🍭 Add some eye candy with GIFS, emojis, and images.

Your blog is an extension of YOU, so let your personality shine! ✨ Sprinkle in some GIFs, images, and emojis to break up the text and keep things light and fun.

Plus, there’s so much that a GIF can communicate that just can’t be put into words…right David?!

🚨 Word of caution: don’t go too crazy with this, too many images can slow down load time and hurt your ranking and user experience. I suggest using TinyJPG to resize images.

Give your blog post some breathing room with white space.

No one likes reading huge blocks of text—it's overwhelming!

Let your content breathe with plenty of white space. By keeping your paragraphs short (3-5 sentences max), you’ll create a much better reading experience.

🎉 BONUS TIP: Create a Blog Template

I love creating templates for my and my client’s blogs because it saves a ton of time!

Here’s how to do it:

Go into Squarespace create a new blog post (or 2) and begin designing a blog. Add text boxes, image boxes, buttons, etc in a flow that you love, and save it as a draft. Then each time you’re ready to design a new blog post, you can go in and duplicate that draft and get to work!

TL;DR ⤵

Blogging doesn’t have to be a longgg boring box of text. Infuse it with personality and throw away any rules your old college professor tried slamming in your brain.

You’re allowed to have fun with colors, GIFS, get expressive and BOLD!
